Why Get A Dental Cleaning?

Dental cleanings is what sets the foundation for a strong immune system, feeling energized and having great overall health. Why? Because the digestion process starts at the mouth when you're chewing and enjoying your favorite foods and turning it into the nutrition and nourishment our bodies need.

During the process of chewing, a soft, sticky, bacteria-infested film known as plaque and tartar stick to your teeth and can cause a host of diseases if not removed regularly. Overtime, plaque and tartar begin to cling onto your teeth even with regular brushing and flossing. Which is why it's strongly recommended to get a professional dental cleaning every 6 months.

What Happends During A Cleaning?

  • Remove Loose Deposits

The dental hygienist and dentist will use specialized instruments to gently remove these deposits without harming the teeth.  First, the dental hygienist will use an ultrasonic device that emits vibrations to knock larger pieces of tartar loose. The ultrasonic device sprays a cooling mist of water while it works to wash away debris and keep the area at a comfortable temperature.

  • Remove Deposits in Tough Areas

Next, hand tools called scalers and curettes are used to manually remove smaller deposits and smooth the tooth surfaces. These tools are curved and shaped to match the curves of the teeth.

  • Polish and Shine

Once all the tooth surfaces have been cleaned of tartar and plaque, the teeth are polished using a slow speed hand piece with a soft rubber cup that spins on the end. Prophylaxis paste which is a special gritty toothpaste like material is applied to the teeth to make them shiny and smooth. Your dental hygienist or dentist may also apply fluoride to the teeth to help strengthen the tooth enamel.

  • Final Check

Lastly, Dr. Chung will take a look to make sure everything is looking great and your teeth and gums are healthy and strong.

Cleaning & Prevention

A dental cleaning has the aim of removing “buildup” from your teeth. This doesn’t mean it’s only recommended for patients whose oral hygiene leaves a lot to be desired.

No matter how vigorously you brush your teeth, plaque and tartar always builds up and will have to be professionally removed by a dentist office. The key to having a healthy smile and great oral health is by getting a cleaning twice a year and brushing and flossing daily.
